The Situation
In recent years, Certified Passive Houses have been in the limelight for being the epitome of energy efficiency. Sang Architects have added to this trend by creating a home that meets German sustainable-building standards, making it New Zealand's first PassivHaus-certified EnerPHit renovation.
The Challenge
The lack of insulation in the existing house led to the growth of internal mould. Upon removing the internal linings, mould was found throughout the structure, mainly in the cold membrane roof cavity.
Damp and cold conditions in many homes aggravate such illnesses. Therefore, it was crucial for the team to prioritise a warm and dry home that not only saves on energy costs but also helps improve the health of the homeowners.
The Solution
Due to the owner's health sensitivity to mould, a decision was made to conduct a complete renovation with the goal of achieving the Certified Passive House EnerPHit standard to prevent any future mould growth.
The existing visible mould was treated, and then the surfaces were sealed using our "bulletproof" bituminous waterproofing membrane by supplying Nuratherm with a 3PM Finish on the roof. Alongside, Nuraply 3PM on the deck and gutter to prevent the spread of any mould spores.
The renovation was a success and has resulted in a sustainable living space that provides the owners with comfort, warm and good heatlh.
